Servant leadership is a philosophy that flips traditional leadership on its head. Unlike conventional leadership models, which place leaders at the top, servant leadership emphasizes the idea that true leadership begins with a commitment to serve others. The central idea is that the leader’s primary responsibility is to serve the needs of their team, customers, and community. This form of leadership prioritizes empowering others, fostering personal growth, and creating an environment of trust and collaboration.

At the heart of servant leadership is the belief that leadership is not about exercising authority, but about being accountable to the people one leads. The leader’s role is to ensure that others have the tools, opportunities, and encouragement they need to develop and succeed. The focus shifts from the leader’s personal power to the well-being and empowerment of those being led.

The Origins of Servant Leadership

The term “servant leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in his seminal essay, The Servant as Leader, published in 1970. Greenleaf’s ideas emerged from his deep reflections on leadership and his personal experiences working in large organizations. He drew inspiration from Hermann Hesse’s novel Journey to the East, which explores the theme of leadership as an act of service.
